Mystery Food Delivery Solved!

When volunteers arrived at the OS Food Bank, on Wednesday, December 18, they discovered three carloads of food being delivered, but without any clear indication from where it came.

While weighing all the food, the volunteers discovered, among the many bags, several labeled “NAPA Auto Parts”. Putting on her sleuthing hat, Anita made a phone call and cleared up the mystery: Jenny, who answered at NAPA, said that they had put out a box to collect food donations for the food bank, and people just kept bringing in food, totaling 1,319 pounds!

We are grateful for the wonderful participation by NAPA in helping us eliminate food insecurity in our community.

The Spirit of Christmas Reigns in Ocean Shores

The Spirit of Christmas was everywhere as the North Beach Singers performed their annual Christmas Concert at Faith Community Church to benefit the Ocean Shores Food Bank. The generosity was overwhelming as concert goers donated $1,156 and 407 pounds of food.

The air was filled with the spirit of Christmas on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon as the North Beach Singers once again performed their Christmas Concert. Holiday songs such as “I Want a Hippo” to “The First Noel” rang through Faith Community Church. As always, the audience sing-a-long was one of the highlights. We are grateful for the wonderful voices and dedication of the North Beach Singers to our community.

1st Security Bank Needs Help Feeding Hungry

Once again, 1st Security Bank is holding its annual Holiday Food Drive in all of its 21 Puget Sound branches, including Ocean Shores. The event is held from October 31 to December 31. The local Ocean Shores branch will be participating this year and again donating both food and cash received to our local Ocean Shores Food Bank.

The response and support from customers, bank employees and communities has been tremendous! In 2018, system-wide, the bank collected over 7,200 lbs. of nonperishable food items and matched dollar for dollar branch customer donations for a combined total of $13,500 that was given to local food banks across the communities served. The annual Holiday Food Drive has been going on for 10 years, and with the bank’s growth during that time from 6 branches to 21 branches, the donations have grown, too.

In this season of abundance and gratitude, residents are encouraged to drop off food or cash donations at 1st Security Bank at 795 Point Brown Ave. NW in Ocean Shores.

Thank you from the staff of the Ocean Shores 1st Security Bank for your support this holiday season in helping feed the hunger in our local community.

Food Insecure Households Can Bank on Timberland for Help

For the third year in a row, Timberland Bank has made a generous donation to the Ocean Shores Food Bank to help local food insecure households have meals to serve their families. “We are grateful to have community partners like Timberland Bank,” said Sandy Harley, executive director of OSFB, “for it is businesses like them that help so many North Beach families have warm meals this fall season.”

Timberland Bank’s Ocean Shores manager, Peggy Arnold, recently presented a $2,000 donation to the Ocean Shores Food Bank. These funds are badly needed to help pay for the additional food purchases the food bank makes during the colder fall months and to help pay for specialty food items for the holidays.

“We are so blessed to live in a community where both businesses and individuals care for those less fortunate,” added Sandy, executive director of OSFB, “These donations truly bring both smiles and nourishment to those in need.”

Real Hunger Is Scary

There are many among us who give up food and go hungry so they can make ends meet.  They don’t wear Freddy Krueger masks, but the pain of hunger can be just as scary to them because it is real.  They look like you and me, but they worry where their next meal will come from.

The Ocean Shores Food Bank is proud to be part of the Halloween trick or treat event for all our young people.    And while we enjoy sharing some joy, smiles, and yes, a boo or two with the community, we can’t help but remember that hunger is real and scary.  Please remember our neighbors this fall with a donation of food or money.

On a scary (and yet serious) note, our Food Bank executive director, Sandy Harley, was heard to say “It seems odd for the food bank to pass out candy when we work so hard to provide nutritional foods for our guests, but the smiles on the kids’ (and parents’) faces tell us we are not only making a food difference but a social difference in the lives of the community we serve.”

Low Income Households Help OSFB Get New Refrigerator for Free

OS Food Bank is part of the TEFAP (The Emergency Food Assistance Program) that regularly provides food for 215 low income households in North Beach.  As part of this federal program the OS Food Bank was given a brand-new refrigerator.  It took many hands to unload and maneuver the new refrigerator into our food bank.  “It was a welcome surprise to be awarded this new storage unit,” says Sandy Harley, Executive Director, and she added “we will put it to good use holding our TEFAP supplies.”

TEFAP is another program OSFB offers to help alleviate food insecurity for low income/elderly households.

The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) is a federal program that helps supplement the diets of low-income Americans including elderly people by providing them with emergency food assistance at no cost. USDA provides 100% American-grown USDA Foods and distributes about half a billion dollars in USDA food each year through food banks across the country.

Under TEFAP states also receive administrative funds that they pass down to local agencies to support the storage and distribution of USDA Foods.

IGA & OSFB Together Help Feed the Hungry

Vince Ianniciello, Ocean Shores IGA store manager, proudly presented a $745 check to Brian Anderson of the Ocean Shores Food Bank. Vince said this check came from their “together we can” program and is a direct result of community involvement and the spirit of giving in Ocean Shores.

This was only one small part of the three-day food bank drive at Ocean Shores IGA.  Many IGA shoppers dropped off food and/or cash (over $1,400 in cash) donations for the OS food bank. On several occasions, people donating mentioned that they had used the local OS food bank in their time of need and now that they were back on their feet wanted to give so others wouldn’t have to go hungry this fall.
